Cody Rhodes said he wanted to make Brock Lesnar look like a victim. At Backlash, The American Nightmare stayed true to his word, bloodying Lesnar in a heated main event.
Almost 18,000 Puerto Ricans flocked to San Juan to see Rhodes and Lesnar settle their rivalry that stemmed from the Raw after WrestleMania 39. The Beast Incarnate attacked Rhodes that night, and in San Juan, Rhodes was out for revenge.
Rhodes jumped Lesnar before the bell, doing his best to get an advantage using the ring steps and a steel chair. Back in the ring, Lesnar took control with his signature barrage of suplexes.
Momentum swung back to Rhodes’ side when a turnbuckle pad was torn off, and Lesnar charged head-first into the exposed steel. The collision caused an immediate cut, and blood quickly covered the face of The Beast.
The American Nightmare pounced on Lesnar with two Cross Rhodes but Lesnar kicked out of the pin. Lesnar soon after locked in his dangerous Kimura, threatening to dislocate Rhodes’ shoulder.
Lesnar’s aggression proved to be his undoing, as Rhodes rocked forward – still caught in the Kimura – and drove Lesnar’s shoulders to the mat. Reluctant to let go of his submission, Lesnar stayed latched on to Cody and was subsequently pinned.
