Spartan claimed the biggest win of his career this past Friday at the New Lynn RSA, besting Reuben de Jong in a physical battle to claim the Hughes Academy Championship.
The challenger withstood a barrage of offence from the powerhouse champion to hit a devastating spear and secure the three-count. Following the victory, Spartan vowed to be a fighting champion moving forward.
“I made a vow to myself that if I won this belt tonight I would not be like Reuben de Jong, I would not run and hide from people,” Spartan said.
“I am going to be a fighting champion. I’m going to take on any and all comers. Anybody who wants a shot at this belt, you got it.”
After winning the Hughes Academy Rumble in late 2020 to earn a shot at the championship, Spartan had been subjected to the whims of a champion in no rush to defend his title. Reuben de Jong was intentionally counted out in the pair’s first outing earlier this year, and found any excuse to avoid a rematch until Friday.
Elsewhere, Dorian Webber continued his undefeated streak with a big win over James Shaw, who was also pinned by the referee after the match while claiming he had been cheated out of the win by Webber.
