As WWE NXT celebrated a silver anniversary, it was Adam Cole who struck gold at TakeOver: XXV.
Cole dethroned Johnny Gargano to become NXT Champion after a thrilling main event on the brand’s 25th TakeOver event.
The Undisputed Era ringleader walked into Bridgeport, Connecticut with an entrance fit for a champion. Wrestle and Flow’s Josiah Williams rapped Cole to the ring with a remix of his regular “Undisputed” soundtrack.
What followed was a 30-minute war against Gargano for the NXT Championship.
Cole methodically targeted Gargano’s knee. The assault prevented Gargano from applying the necessary pressure in his Gargano Escape submission hold, and afforded Cole a way out.
Cole eventually floored Johnny Wrestling with a Panama City Sunrise. With Gargano on wobbly legs, Cole nailed the Last Shot and pinned his rival to become NXT Champion.
“For months now I’ve been saying The Undisputed Era is going to be draped in championship gold,” Cole told Cathy Kelley. “And look, this is the first and most important step: Adam Cole has become the NXT Champion.
“Now it’s only a matter of time before Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly regain the NXT Tag Team Championships because they are the best tag team in the world. One of the baddest men in the entire world, Roderick Strong, I think that North American Championship looks pretty nice, doesn’t it?
“It’s only a matter of time before our prophecy comes true. The Undisputed Era will not just run NXT, we will run all of WWE, and there’s not a single person on the planet that’s gonna stop us.”
