“That Young Warrior” Paul Sayers earned a new moniker this past weekend: Jackson Shield holder.
Sayers defeated Blaze and Charlie Roberts for the title at Maniacs Strike Back in Auckland on Saturday night.
The Jackson Shield is the first singles championship Sayers has held in his 10-year career. He becomes just the fourth man to hold the title.
After a back-and-forth triple threat, Sayers homed in on Blaze. That Young Warrior picked the fire-eater up for the Idoliser, a fireman’s carry gutbuster, and slammed Blaze over his knees. Roberts then hammered a distracted Sayers with the Platinum Plunge.
Blaze’s manager, Cam Corban, broke up Roberts’ pinning attempt and ate a right-hand seconds later. Sayers followed up with a superkick for Corban.
Blaze tried to surprise his opponents by leaping from the top rope. Both Roberts and Sayers saw it coming though, and nailed the Jackson Shield holder with superkicks.
Sayers quickly moved into action and powered Roberts up for the Idoliser. With Blaze and Corbin unconscious at ringside, this time there was no one to break up the pin.
